What exactly is a nut?

A nut is a metal ring threaded on the inside. Nuts tend to be used in combination with bolts or threaded ends to connect objects. Our product range consists of two types of nuts: general purpose nuts and nuts for fastening hatch toggles. The latter application is detailed below.

General purpose nuts: hexagon nuts, self-locking nuts and blind nuts

The simplest nut is the hexagon nut. It is often referred to as a nut. We use this nut in our adjustable hinges, among other applications. It is threaded onto the eye bolt and its function is to connect the pivot point and the frame.
Nuts are available in stainless steel in sizes M10, M12, M16 and M20.

Use self-locking nuts to ensure your nuts will not spontaneously loosen their grip. A self-locking nut has a plastic ring on the inside of the thread that prevents vibrations from loosening the nut. We use self-locking nuts in our door toggles, among other applications. The self-locking nut is screwed onto the lever with shaft and ensures that the counter lever stays securely on the shaft.
Self-locking nuts are available in stainless steel in sizes M10, M12, M16 and M20. Size M16 is also available in galvanised steel.

Blind nuts are a bit of an oddity in this category. One of our customers uses the self-locking nut to blind windows, for example. This customer ships shipbuilding kits to shipyards abroad by container. Blind nuts are welded around the windows. Sheets are mounted to blind the windows and protect the glass. Upon arrival at the destination, the sheets and blind nuts are removed. Blind nuts are available in aluminium and stainless steel-316 in size M12

Tightening hatch toggles: bow nuts, butterfly nuts and tail nuts

Hatch toggles are installed on hatches to allow for the hatch to close properly (see photo). The hatch toggles are fitted with a special type of nut that presses the hatch rubber so firmly into the coaming that the hatch becomes weather or waterproof (under construction).

The following types of nuts can be used:

  • Bow nuts: bow nuts are often considered the more aesthetic option compared to butterfly nuts or tail nuts; the bow nut has the added benefit that ropes are less likely to get caught behind it.
  • Butterfly nuts: the benefit of a butterfly nut is that you can apply more force to it than to a bow nut or a tail nut.
  • Tail nuts: a hatch toggle can also be fitted with a tail nut; however, tail nuts are less commonly used on a hatch toggle than bow nuts or toggle nuts.

Choose the nut you need

Bow nuts, butterfly nuts and tail nuts are available in brass and stainless steel. Apart from aesthetic reasons for choosing brass or stainless steel, there may be other reasons for choosing one or the other, such avoiding galvanic corrosion or limiting the risk of crevice corrosion.
Visit the material properties page to determine what material is right for you.

Visit the bow nuts page for more information about this type of nut.

Visit the butterfly nuts page for more information about this type of nut.

Tail nuts are available in brass in sizes M16 and M20 and in stainless steel in size M16.
