What exactly is a dog bolt?

A dog bolt is a super strong bolt with an eye used to attach or clamp two parts together. This could be a door to a frame or a hatch to a coaming. These bolts have an eye that fits an axle, serving as a pivot point.

Dog bolts are also known as eye bolts, clamp bolts or swing bolts. These bolts adhere to the DIN 444 standard.
 

A full-threaded bolt with eye: widely applicable

All dog bolts we supply are metric and full-threaded. Full-threaded means that the shank length is zero. The thread starts right from the eye and continues along the entire length of the bolt. This allows for the nut to be screwed on further, making these bolts more widely applicable than bolts that are not threaded along their entire length. Another benefit of this type of bolt is that the bolts can be shortened without having to worry about running out of thread.

Dog bolts for hatch toggles

One application of dog bolts is in hatch toggles (see photo). Here is how to do it:

1. Weld a mounting bracket on the coaming and a toggle plate on the hatch.
2. Attach the dog bolt to the mounting set (mounting bracket + accessories to attach the dog bolt to the mounting bracket).
3. Tighten a nut on the dog bolt. Tighten it so that the toggle plate and consequently the hatch are tightly connected to the coaming (pressed firmly into the rubber). This is how the hatch can be made weather or waterproof.

• Complete hatch toggle: an assembly comprising a mounting set, a dog bolt and a nut, or
• Dog bolt with mounting set: an assembly comprising a mounting set and a dog bolt. In practice, this is often referred to as a ‘weld-on set’.

• Diameter: we can supply dog bolts with a diameter of M10, M12, M16, M20, M22, M24, M27 and M30. A diameter between M12 and M20 is used for door hinges. Hatch toggles are fitted with dog bolts with a diameter between M10 and M30.
• Length: we offer dog bolts with a height between 80 and 280 millimetres. Door hinges are fitted with dog bolts with a length between 80 and 130 mm. Hatch toggles are fitted with dog bolts with a length between 80 and 280 mm.
