What is a welding kit?

A welding kit is an essential part of a hatch toggle. A hatch toggle basically consists of four parts:

• A mounting set (see 1): this part is usually welded to the non-moving part of the structure, the coaming or frame on which the hatch rests. The welding kit consists of several components of which the mounting bracket is one of the most important.
• A dog bolt (see 2), a dog bolt is also called an eye bolt: this is the hinged part of a hatch toggle.
• A nut (see 3): butterfly nuts and bow nuts are the most suitable for mounting hatches. Other nuts such as lock nuts or tail nuts may also be used, but these are less practical in reality.
• A clamp plate (not shown): clamp plates are usually welded to the hatch. A hatch is secured by tightening the nut, in effect clamping in place both the clamp plate and the hatch.

Available materials and sizes

Mounting brackets are available in stainless steel and aluminium. Use a stainless-steel mounting bracket for steel or stainless-steel structures and an aluminium bracket for aluminium structures.

Eye bolts, bow nuts and butterfly nuts are available in brass and stainless steel. These materials can be used in various combinations. See the material properties page to find out the pros and cons of specific choices.
