What exactly is a door hinge?

Heavy-duty door hinges are designed to support the weight of heavy doors or gates while ensuring smooth operation when opening or closing the door. They are used in shipbuilding, offshore, industry and any other place with heavy, metal doors or gates!

A door hinge consists of a component attached to the door and a component attached to a wall or doorpost. Both components pivot around a pivot shaft, which in many cases is fitted with a lubrication nipple. The grease nipple keeps the door moving smoothly.

Good to know: we are calling it a door hinge here, but you can apply this type of hinge to entrance gates or fences as well, as long as it is a metal gate or fence.

What types of heavy-duty door hinges are available?

Heavy doors are used in industry, offshore and shipbuilding. Hinges used for this purpose are subjected to heavy loads, which demand a heavy-duty execution.

Rob Snel’s product range consists of several types of heavy-duty door hinges that are more or less suitable as door hinges depending on the weight of the door:

  • Adjustable hinges are sturdy, heavy-duty hinges often used in watertight doors. The benefit of these hinges is that they can be adjusted for proper compression of the rubber. This is a requirement from the ship classification society if a door has to be weather or waterproof. The main components of these hinges are a hinge plate, an eye bolt and a hinge shaft.
  • Slotted hinges are often used when toggles are also applied on the hinge side. The difference with an adjustable hinge is that a slotted hinge features a thick strip with a slotted hole instead of an eye bolt. A slotted hinge is very strong as well, but less adjustable. The main components of this type of hinge are a hinge plate, a slotted hinge pin and a hinge shaft.
  • Weld-on hinges and weld-on bullet hinges are slightly less heavy duty than adjustable hinges and slotted hinges. This makes these hinges suitable for somewhat lighter doors. The position of weld-on hinges and weld-on bullet hinges is subject to fewer requirements, and they are not adjustable. Weld-on hinges consist of two hinge blades and a hinge pin. Weld-on bullet hinges consist of two drop-shaped profiles without side plates and a hinge pin.

Centre type or flat type?

In most cases, the various types of hinges are available in a centre type and a flat type version.

The difference? In the centre type version, one side of the hinge plate aligns with the centre line of the hinge point.

In the flat type version, the outside of the hinge plate is in line with the outside of the round cover of the hinge point. This makes the outside completely level. You can also choose to weld the hinge plate onto the door the other way round, i.e. with the flat side down.

Choose the desired door hinge or gate hinge

We offer door and gate hinges in various types, sizes and materials.

The material and dimensions of the hinge

  • Adjustable hinges have an aluminium, stainless steel or steel hinge plate with a centre type or flat type design. The eye bolt is made of stainless steel and available in various lengths and diameters.
  • Slotted hinges have an aluminium, stainless steel or steel hinge plate with a centre type or flat type design and a slotted hinge pin of aluminium, stainless steel or steel.
  • Weld-on hinges are available in various heights and widths, and only come in steel with a brass hinge pin.
  • Weld-on bullet hinges are available in various heights in aluminium and stainless steel.

With or without lubrication nipple

All adjustable and slotted hinges are equipped with a lubrication nipple and weld-on bullet hinges can be equipped with a lubrication nipple as well. Weld-on hinges are always supplied without a lubrication nipple.
