What are heavy-duty hinges?

Heavy-duty hinges are robust, sturdy metal joints used to secure doors, gates, fences, hatches and other heavy structures to their frames. Unlike standard hinges, heavy-duty hinges are designed to withstand extreme loads, making them ideal for industrial and marine applications and for doors that are opened and closed frequently.

Why are they important?

  • Supporting heavy loads: heavy-duty hinges are capable of supporting significant weights without bending or breaking. This makes them ideal for applications where heavy doors or gates need to be supported.
  • Durability and safety: thanks to their robust construction, heavy-duty hinges offer a high degree of durability and safety. Depending on the hinge plate material chosen, they are resistant to wear and corrosion, ensuring a long service life and minimal maintenance requirements.
  • Stability and reliability: heavy-duty hinges ensure stable and reliable operation of doors, hatches and gates, even under the most demanding conditions.

Hinges for heavy doors

Heavy door hinges are used to support metal doors and gates.
The most robust versions that can be used for this purpose are the adjustable hinge and the slotted hinge. The adjustable hinge is the most commonly used. One of the reasons for this is the flexible and simple way this hinge is mounted.

It is also possible to use weld-on hinges or weld-on bullet hinges. These are mostly still suitable for heavy-duty applications, but are slightly lighter than adjustable hinges and slotted hinges.

Most hinges are fitted with a lubricating nipple. This ensures that your door, hatch, gate or other type of structure continues to function smoothly.

Heavy door hinge: an adjustable hinge is a logical choice

This hinge is robust and easily adjustable. It includes an outside hinge joint, a hinge spindle, an eye bolt and two nuts. The outside hinge joint is welded to the moving part, door, gate or hatch, and attached to the metal structure using threaded bushings or hinge brackets.

The outside hinge joint is available in aluminium, steel and stainless steel. This type of hinge can therefore be applied to doors, gates and hatches of the same material.
The eye bolt is always made of stainless steel. So the structure is always mounted robustly and is resistant to corrosion.

What is best when using toggles on the hinge side of heavy doors or hatches?

When a door or hatch also uses toggles on the hinge side, slotted hinges are used. A slotted hinge is the ideal choice for this purpose because this leaves space around the hinge to press in the rubber seal using the toggle.

What kind of toggles are used for this?

  • For doors: always door toggles
  • For hatches: hatch toggles or door toggles (e.g. door toggles are used for escape hatches because this type of hatch must be openable from the inside)

Heavy hinges for gates

Whether it is heavy-duty hinges for doors or for gates, the principle is the same. You can apply the same hinges. It is of course important here that the gate is made of the same metal as the outside hinge joint used. This does not mean that this type of hinge could not be applied to wooden gates. The important thing is that the wood is then mounted in a metal frame to which the hinges can be welded.

Applying heavy hinges outside is no problem at all. The hinges we supply are ideally suited to harsh conditions and weather.
